In the winter months, colder air and lack of humidity can make skin dry and chapped. However, some simple beauty tips can help to keep skin hydrated, clear, and glowing. While they are particularly relevant in the winter, these tips can be helpful to keep in mind for fresh, beautiful skin all year round.

Tip #1: Bring the moisture indoors

Skin tends to dry out easily during the winter months when there’s less humidity in the air. In fact, skin starts to dry out as soon as people turn their heat on. Hooking up a humidifier can help to counteract the drying effects of the hot air circulating indoors. Humidifiers in the bedroom can be particularly helpful. A humidifier in the bedroom helps prevent getting dehydrated overnight and waking up with dry, cracked skin.

Tip #2: Beware of hot showers

When it’s cold outside in the winter, a person’s first instinct might be to jump in a hot shower to warm up. But take care that the shower isn’t too warm. Water that is too hot can strip away the skin’s natural oils, making skin dry and cracked. If skin becomes so dry that it gets itchy, taking a lukewarm bath or shower with baking soda can help to relieve severe itchiness.

Tip #3: Lock in natural moisturizer

Moisturizing right after bathing or showering can help to lock in the skin’s natural moisture, making moisturizer longer-lasting. Winter is also the time to look at changing up products. Look at ingredient lists in moisturizers and opt for products that are oil-based instead of water-based. However, choose oils that are non-clogging and non-comedogenic for best results.

Tip #4: Don’t get derailed by holiday drinks

Drinking extra water can be a strategy to hydrating skin from the inside out. In the winter months, holiday drinks, extra coffee, hot chocolate, and ciders can distract people from getting enough water. However, dehydration can lead to skin that is flaky, dry, and more prone to wrinkles.

Tip #5: Keep it simple

The wrong cleanser can make dry, itchy skin even more irritated. Use the winter time to opt for gentle cleansers that are “fragrance-free.” Sometimes products labeled “unscented” still contain irritants. The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends cutting out products that contain alcohol, retinoids, or alpha-hydroxy acids when skin is dry in the winter time.

Even though it’s preventable, skin cancer is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. Why? People fail to take preventive measures, such as using sunscreen. Sunscreen should be a daily habit, just like brushing teeth. It can be easy to forget to use sunscreen in the winter, especially for people who live in areas that don’t get a lot of sunshine in the winter. However, sunscreen use not only prevents skin cancer, it also protects from other effects of sun damage, such as wrinkles, early aging, and overly dry skin.
