Diaper Rash Treatment

Diaper rash is a fairly common thing for babies, infants, and even toddlers. It is a rash, or dermatitis, in the diaper area that is usually caused by chafing, skin sensitivity, and staying in a wet diaper too long. Diaper rash can also occur as a result of introducing new food, or a new product such as baby wipes or a different diaper brand. If your child has sensitive skin or has been on an antibiotic, the chance for diaper rash increases as well.

Diaper rash can irritate the skin and your child’s disposition because it is uncomfortable.

There are several home remedies to try before seeing your dermatologist.

  • Change your baby’s diaper often, as soon as you notice that the diaper is wet or dirty. Make sure the diaper fits well and is not on too tight.
  • Gently clean the diaper area with skin sensitive baby wipes. Also wash the diaper area gently with warm water. Do not use alcohol or anything with a fragrance. Never scrub,
  • Let the area air dry or pat dry with a clean cloth.
  • If possible, leave your baby without a diaper on for a bit to thoroughly air dry.
  • Use an ointment daily to help prevent diaper rash from occurring. Products with zinc oxide or petroleum jelly are the best.
  • Always wash your hands well after a diaper change.

Diaper rashes usually take several days to get better. But, if the rash appears to worsen or is not healing, visit Northstar Dermatology to visit Dr. Aboutalebi. Chances are you will be prescribed a steroid cream or an antifungal cream. If your baby is diagnosed with a bacterial infection then an antibiotic medication might be prescribed.
