Acne Treatment | Fort Worth TX | Keller TXAdult acne? It is real.

Maybe you had acne as a teenager and thought those days were long gone. Or, maybe you dodged it as a teen and are now facing acne as an adult.

Either way, adult acne can happen, and either way, there are treatments for it. Women are more likely to get adult acne than men, and there are a variety of reasons that adult acne occurs.

Acne can have a genetic cause. Those with acne in the genes (do you have a parent, brother, or sister with acne?) are more likely to have adult acne.

Stress can be linked to acne – no wonder we sometimes breakout when we are undergoing stressful situations. When we are stressed our bodies produce more of the hormone called androgens and androgens stimulate the oil glands and hair follicles.

Hair and skin care products can also affect adult acne, especially such items as moisturizers, cleansers, and sunscreens. Start reading labels to look for items that are non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, oil-free, and those that specify that they do not clog pores.  Such products are less likely to cause adult acne.

Medication can also be an adult acne trigger. If you think this might be happening to you, talk to your physician. You might want to ask for an alternate medication.  And sometimes adult acne is caused by an underlying medical condition.

For women, and remember that women are more likely to have adult onset acne than men, hormonal levels can also cause acne breakouts. Fluctuating hormones that happen during your period as well as during pregnancy, pre-menopause, and menopause can increase the chance for acne. And it is also possible to start after starting or stopping birth control pills.

If you are experiencing adult acne, please see your dermatologist because treatment is available and adult acne can be managed.
