Holiday Stress and Skincare | Fort Worth TX | Keller TXThe “most wonderful time of the year,” as the song says, can also be a stressful time of year. The holiday season can put stress on time, finances, emotions, family dynamics and all of that stress and overdoing can also show up on your skin.

Cortisol, the stress hormone, can wreak havoc with skin. Increased stress causes increased cortisol release that can cause oily skin and inflamed skin. That, in turn, could lead to acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and other skin issues. Stress can also be a cause of fever blisters, dark circles under your eyes, and hair loss. If you notice any of these symptoms, or remember them from past holiday seasons, contact your dermatologist and ask about the seasonal skin services they might provide. You might want to consider a facial, chemical peel, or healthy and hydrating moisturizers and toners.

Try to continue your usual skincare routine. If you don’t currently have one, consider asking your dermatologist or aesthetician to help you develop one. This is the perfect time of year to give yourself the gift of healthy skincare.

There is more you can do to keep your skin and emotions peaceful and calm. During this time of year, try to assess what events, emotions, and even people are stress triggers for you. Understanding where the stress comes from can help you to eliminate some of it.

Keep your social activities to a minimum and try to attend only the events and activities that you enjoy. This might not always be possible, so limit your stays at stress-producing events.

Make sure to get enough sleep in your schedule and try to eat nutritious meals. Enjoy the holiday goodies, remembering that the key is moderation. Holiday drinking can also cause facial dryness and puffiness. Again, moderation is the key.

Make the decision to keep the holiday season one of joy and delight by giving yourself permission to scale back on the stressful events and take care of yourself.
