Most spider bites are harmless and require simple skin care.

A spider bite, if you feel it at all, is a sharp, quick pricking feeling.

If it is a harmless bite, you might not even feel the bite and might not have any symptoms. However, symptoms of a spider bite can include an inflamed bump on your skin that is sometimes itchy or painful.  Your skin’s sensitivity plays a role in what kind of skin reaction you have to a spider bite.

Keep an eye on your skin to note any changes after a bite.

Depending on how the patch of skin surrounding the bite feels, you can do a few things to soothe the area. Clean the area with soap and water. If there are pain and swelling, then apply a cold compress to the area. If there is swelling, you might want to keep the area elevated. If discomfort continues, try an over-the-counter pain reliever or an antihistamine. If the skin has been broken, then keep an eye for possible infection.

For most spider bites, nothing else is required. However, if the bite is from a poisonous spider, a Black Widow or Brown Recluse Spider, the situation might need a bit more care.

If the bite is from a Black Widow Spider, your symptoms can include pain both at the bite site and also pain that spreads to other parts of the body. Abdominal cramping is also a symptom as well as excessive sweating.  Seek medical help if you have these symptoms.

If you have been bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider, pain may increase during the hours after the bite. Fever, chills, and aches and pains also can accompany a Brown Recluse Spider bite. Sometimes an open sore develops. Symptoms should go away within a week to ten days. However severe bites can result in dead skin.

If you think you received a poisonous spider bite, from a Black Widow or a Brown Recluse spider, please get medical help if you have extreme pain, cramping, an open sore at the bite site, or if you are having trouble breathing.
