Chemical peels are a safe and easy way to exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin.
A chemical peel is a chemical solution that is applied to your face, neck, and/or hands. The solution is left on for a few moments and then gently washed off. The result initially may be red skin that then exfoliates and leaves the skin underneath smoother and less wrinkled.
Chemical peels can be mild, medium, or deep.
For a mild chemical peel, a mild acid solution – such as alpha-hydroxy acid – is used. It will be applied to your skin and allowed to gently exfoliate. A mild peel can be expected to refresh your skin’s appearance as well as improve mild discoloration and rough skin.
For a medium peel, you can expect a chemical such as glycolic or trichloroacetic acid. It goes deeper into the outer and middle skin layers to remove damaged skin cells. You can expect the result to be smoother skin, with improvement in age spots, wrinkles, and fine lines.
If a deep peel is chosen, you can expect a chemical such as trichloroacetic or phenol acid to deeply penetrate the outer and middle skin layers. You can expect a dramatic improvement in your skin’s condition and fewer lines, age spots, and freckles.
A deep peel can only be done on your skin once. The others, mild and medium, can be repeated.
Chemicals peels are not painful, but there can be some stinging associated with them. You will likely be provided with creams and gels to help reduce and soothe the side effects.
