Melasma Treatment in Colleyville

Melasma is a skin condition marked by dark patches that commonly develop on facial areas. Although the exact cause of melasma is still being studied, several known triggers contribute to its onset. While melasma is generally symptom-free, the noticeable difference in pigmentation across your face can understandably be a cosmetic concern. Why Does Melasma Happen?

Melasma is more common in women (typically between the ages of 20-40 years old) and in darker skin
tones. There may be a genetic component to melasma, although the exact gene is unknown.

Common triggers include:
• Sunlight/ UV light- However, there are some studies showing that even visible light can be a trigger
• High estrogen states- pregnancy (why melasma is sometimes called the “mask of pregancy), oral contraceptive pills, hormone replacement therapy
• Medications- anti-seizure medications, ones that increase sun sensitivity (some antibiotics and blood pressure medications)
• Thyroid disease

Options For Treatment

Melasma can linger for years or fade quickly once the underlying cause is addressed. The specialists at Northstar Dermatology will help you reduce melasma flare-ups with one or more of the following methods:

  • Topical Treatments: These can include products with hydroquinone, a traditional skin-lightening agent. However, hydroquinone requires caution with long-term use, as it can paradoxically darken the skin. Dicarboxylic acids such as azelaic and kojic acid, gentle corticosteroids, and tretinoin may also be used.
  • Procedural Treatments: Microneedling, chemical peels, and laser therapies are common solutions, though they must be applied carefully. Overuse of peels or lasers can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and skin damage.
  • Trigger Avoidance: The best strategy involves reducing exposure to known triggers. This means limiting sun exposure, using mineral-based sunscreen (which blocks UV and visible light), and managing any medication or thyroid issues with guidance from a healthcare professional.
