What are Cysts?
Epidermal cysts are sac-like growths commonly filled with dead skin cells and oil that form under the surface of the skin. These growths are common and occur as a result of clogged follicles, glands or pores. Most cysts are harmless, benign growths.
It is important not to squeeze or try to pop cysts because this can lead to infection and scarring.
Typically cysts do not require removal, but your dermatologist can excise cysts that become infected, inflamed, painful or bothersome.
How is Cyst Removal Performed?
For cyst removal to be effective, it is necessary to remove the entire cyst. If the content of the cyst is removed but the sac is left in place, the cyst will frequently recur.
During total excision of a cyst, your dermatologist will use anesthetic to numb the area surrounding the cyst. The entire cyst is then surgically removed and the incision carefully sutured back together. The cyst is then sent to the lab for pathological examination.
Your dermatologist will ask you to return for suture removal within one to two weeks, depending on the location of the cyst. Small incisions may not require sutures, and instead be allowed to heal naturally.
If the cyst is inflamed or infected, your dermatologist may give antibiotics or corticosteroid injections prior to cyst removal.
