Board-Certified Dermatologists do not recommend at-home or DIY microneedling (sometimes called derma-rolling). Firstly, at-home treatments are not clinically proven to provide any benefit to the skin as the needle lengths are restricted and cannot penetrate the dermis layer of the skin. Secondly, at-home/DIY treatments are high risk for infection since they are not done in a sterile environment or with sterile equipment. At-home treatments can often lead to more complications than benefits. In contrast, professional microneedling treatments use a safe, FDA approved device with single-use sterile needle cartridges.
