Keloid scars are commonly treated with steroid injections to reduce inflammation and shrink the scar. Typically, a series of repeated injections is needed for optimal results. If the keloid does not respond to corticosteroids, other medications may be injected. Alternatively, keloids can be surgically removed; however, it’s important to note that keloids often reappear after surgery, as they are caused by skin trauma. Your dermatologist may recommend additional steroid injections to help lower the risk of recurrence.
