An epidermal cyst, also called an epidermoid cyst, is a benign growth that forms beneath the skin and contains skin cells and keratin, a soft material naturally produced by the body. These cysts often begin as a small lump or nodule but may gradually grow larger over time.
Cysts may be treated or removed if they become inflamed, infected, or painful. Removal may also be considered when a cyst becomes large enough to interfere with daily activities or causes ongoing discomfort.
Treatment depends on the condition of the cyst. Inflamed or infected cysts may be treated with antibiotics, steroid injections, or a procedure called incision and drainage.
Epidermoid cysts may also be removed through surgical excision. During this procedure, one of our board-certified dermatologists numbs the area, makes a small incision, and removes the cyst and its surrounding capsule. Removing the entire cyst wall helps reduce the chance of the cyst returning.
The area is then closed with sutures, and patients may need to limit lifting or strenuous physical activity for a short period while the site heals.
